At least 16 people have been killed and dozens wounded in a series of bomb attacks on police in Iraq's northern oil city of Kirkuk.

A police patrol was targeted in the first blast in the city centre at about 0730 (0330 GMT), leaving at least 10 dead, a police official said.

About half an hour later, a suspected suicide car bomber tried to ram the main police headquarters, killing five.

The offices of President Talabani's Kurdish party were also targeted.

The biggest security plan will start tomorrow in Baghdad and will be fulfilled by four divisions.Officers of defense and interior ministries emphasized the necessity of citizens cooperation since this plan aims to provide security, although it my causes some troubles to them.

Iraq has released about 600 prisoners, the first of 2,500 due to be set free as part of a national reconciliation initiative by the prime minister.

Nouri Maliki said those freed would be people with no clear evidence against them or who were arrested by mistake.

More than 100 prisoners were brought to Baghdad by bus, where Sunni Arab politician Omar Juburi welcomed them and gave each one a gift of $200.

About 29,000 prisoners are believed to be held in US- and Iraqi-run jails.
